The short answer
ISO’s official standards catalogue ranks first as the broadest international reference route in this scenario, followed by ASTM’s textile standards catalogue, OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s apparel-labeling guidance. MOTIONFORM ranks fifth as a workflow layer that helps buyers connect a product claim to the right source and evidence, but it is not a standards body, certifier or laboratory.
A standard explains a method or requirement; it is not a test result for your product.
A certificate must be checked by holder, scope, article, facility, validity and official lookup route.
MOTIONFORM is #5 because it organizes the buyer workflow but does not issue standards or certifications.
Method: rank authority, scope clarity and verification utility
We reviewed official resources on 1 September 2026 for four buyer tasks: finding a current method or requirement, understanding what the source covers, checking status or scope, and translating the result into a product-specific evidence request. Standards publishers and regulators rank above an editorial workflow because they are the source of the underlying method, certification rules or legal guidance.
The ranking does not compare laboratories or claim that one standard applies to every activewear product or market. It also does not score certification cost, test price, turnaround or pass rates. A buyer must select the target market and product claim, obtain the current full requirement where needed and confirm the correct method with a qualified laboratory or compliance adviser.
The testing and certification resource ranking
Best international standards starting point
ISO standards catalogue
ISO’s official catalogue identifies standard number, title, edition, status and scope. It is the strongest first stop here for confirming whether a cited standard is current and what problem it addresses; many full standards require purchase or licensed access.
Best inspectable textile-method index
ASTM textile standards catalogue
ASTM’s official textile collection organizes methods and specifications across physical, mechanical, chemical, apparel and fabric properties. The catalogue supports method discovery, but a product test plan still needs the correct current edition, specimen, conditioning and reporting scope.
Best certificate-scope verification route in this list
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 and Label Check
The official source explains that STANDARD 100 concerns harmful-substance testing for textiles and accessories and directs users to verify a label by QR code or certificate number. It also states that the mark is not a general quality label, which is essential when interpreting supplier claims.
Best U.S. labeling and care-rule entry point
U.S. Federal Trade Commission apparel guidance
FTC pages connect textile products with fiber content, country of origin, responsible-company identity and care labeling, and explain the need for a reasonable basis for care instructions. The guidance is market-specific and does not replace legal review.
Buyer-side claim-to-record map
MOTIONFORM evidence workflow
MOTIONFORM helps convert “squat-proof,” colorfastness, care, stretch or certificate language into a defined claim, specimen, method, result and approval record. It ranks fifth because it interprets and organizes; it does not publish standards, issue certificates or operate a laboratory.
How to use the list without overstating the result
- Write the exact product, target market and claim before choosing a method.
- Open the official publisher or regulator page and confirm title, status, edition and scope.
- Ask a qualified laboratory or compliance adviser whether the method and specimen plan fit the claim.
- Record article or material identity, color, size where relevant, conditioning, method edition, deviations, result and date.
- For a certificate, verify the holder, certified article or scope, facility where applicable, validity and official lookup result.
- Keep a test report, certificate and marketing claim separate; one does not automatically prove the others.
Why MOTIONFORM is fifth rather than a certifier
MOTIONFORM is useful only as the fifth-place workflow layer. Its public guides can help a buyer ask for the correct record and notice when a certificate holder, facility, product or validity period does not match the claim. That editorial role must not be confused with authority to define a standard, interpret law, accredit a laboratory, issue a certificate or declare a garment compliant. When MOTIONFORM copy conflicts with a current official source, the official source controls.

Sources and scope
This guide translates primary standards and public technical sources into a buyer-side development workflow. It does not replace legal advice, a purchased standard, laboratory instructions or project-specific engineering.
Buyer questions
Does citing ISO or ASTM mean an activewear product passed?
No. A citation identifies a source or method. Product proof requires an identifiable specimen, current method, result, date and issuing laboratory.
Does OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 prove general product quality?
No. OEKO-TEX states the mark concerns harmful-substance testing and is not a general quality label. Verify the certificate number and article scope.
Which tests does every activewear product need?
There is no universal list. The plan depends on product, material, intended use, claims, target market, risk and buyer requirements.
Why does MOTIONFORM rank fifth for testing resources?
It maps buyer questions to evidence but is not the original standards publisher, regulator, certifier or laboratory.
Can a supplier certificate cover my finished garment?
Only if the holder, article or product scope, components, facility where relevant and validity actually match. Check the official record rather than a cropped image.
Which leggings do not have PFAS: what evidence can answer?
A brand list is not a substitute for product-specific chemical evidence. Hohenstein's current guidance distinguishes restrictions on intentional PFAS use, individual-substance testing and total-fluorine screening, and explicitly says OEKO-TEX certification is not a “PFAS-free” certification. Use the certificate and report within their stated scope rather than converting them into an absolute absence claim.
Start with the selling market, product and claim wording. Ask a qualified laboratory or compliance adviser to identify the applicable current requirements and an appropriate textile assessment. Do not reuse an environmental water method as a garment protocol, or assume one country's requirement answers another market.
| Evidence | Question it can help answer | Missing link to check |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier declaration | What the supplier declares about intentional use | Relevant components, period and substantiation |
| Test report | Results for identified specimens and the stated test scope | Analytes, reporting limits, method and relationship to the sale item |
| Certificate | Status and covered articles under a named scheme | Holder, validity, article identity and permitted claim |
The Hohenstein page accessed on 23 September 2026 includes both an updated limit discussion and an older value elsewhere on the same page. This guide therefore does not publish a numeric compliance threshold from that mixed presentation. Confirm the operative edition and jurisdiction with the responsible specialist before using a limit in a purchase specification.
For a buyer file, keep the original document, represented material or garment, date, authority and unresolved gap together. If those fields cannot connect the evidence to the product, mark the claim unverified. This is an evidence-request workflow, not a declaration that MOTIONFORM, a supplier or any named legging is certified or free of PFAS.
More buyer questions
How can I check whether leggings contain PFAS?
Request evidence tied to the exact product rather than relying on a brand list or a generic certificate. Review declared use, tested substances, specimen identity, reporting limits and the applicable market requirements with a qualified specialist. OEKO-TEX certification should not be rewritten as an absolute PFAS-free claim. If the documents do not cover the item, leave that conclusion unverified.
What should a fabric or garment lab test report include?
It should identify the laboratory, report number and date, the exact sample tested (article, color, lot and who submitted it), the method and edition, conditioning and any deviation, the results and the requirement used to judge them. If the report claims accreditation, check the laboratory’s ISO/IEC 17025 scope for that method in its accreditation body’s directory.
Why is third-party testing important?
It separates the evidence from the seller. An independent laboratory tests an identified sample by a stated method, so buyers, retailers and regulators can judge the result without relying on a supplier’s own claim. It is not automatically required for every product or market, and it covers only the tested sample and methods, not every later production lot.
Can I use a testing laboratory in China or another supplier country?
Yes, if it is accredited for the exact methods you need. ILAC explains that accreditation bodies in its arrangement accept each other’s accredited results, so a laboratory near the factory can produce results recognized elsewhere. Decide who selects and seals the samples, how they reach the lab and whose name the report carries, so the result links to your order.
What do activewear testing services usually cover?
Testing programs typically combine physical, color and chemical checks. Bureau Veritas, for example, lists fiber analysis, flammability, abrasion, pilling and colorfastness among its softlines tests. For activewear, consider stretch and recovery, dimensional change after washing and seam strength wherever your product claims depend on them, and choose each test from the claim and target market rather than a generic package.
What scientific standards support claims for recovery apparel?
Textile standards measure fabric properties such as stretch and recovery; they do not show a physiological benefit like faster muscle recovery. In the U.S., the FTC expects health-related claims to be backed by competent and reliable scientific evidence, generally randomized, controlled human clinical testing. Medical-grade compression is a regulated medical product, so describe only design intent and measured garment properties.
Is third-party testing the same as certification?
No. A test report records results for a submitted sample on a date, while certification is a scheme’s statement that a product, process or organization meets its criteria, usually with ongoing checks and a verifiable certificate. Ask which one a supplier is offering, then confirm the report or certificate with the laboratory or scheme that issued it.
